When I set out to design my newest bridal collection for Delana Muse, I knew it would be deeply personal. For months, I’d been dreaming of creating something inspired by my roots—a collection that would honor the intricate and soulful beauty of West African Hausa architecture while staying true to the ethereal, modern, and sensual aesthetic that defines Delana Muse. What I didn’t anticipate was the wave of emotions that would come with leaning so much into my African heritage for inspiration. I am from Ghana, a country rich with many beautiful ethnic groups, including the Hausas. Though I’m not Hausa myself, their culture and architectural artistry struck a chord with me. The architectural symbols within Hausa design, particularly one that reminded me of an infinity symbol, inspired an embroidered laser-cut textile that weaves continuity throughout the collection. The seed for this collection was planted during a moment of reflection. I found myself drawn to the intricate patterns and timeless beauty of Hausa architecture—the way it combines elegance with strength, tradition with innovation. From there, the vision unfolded. I imagined brides walking down the aisle in gowns adorned with 3D florals inspired by the desert rose, textured organza prints, and even a green floral print that would bring a fresh, unexpected twist to bridalwear. But as the ideas came to life, so did the uncertainty. I’ll admit, I had moments of doubt. Would people connect with a collection so rooted in African cultural elements? Would it resonate in an industry that often leans heavily on Western traditions and aesthetics? There were days when I questioned whether I was taking too big a risk. In those moments, I reminded myself why I do what I do. Representation matters. The bridal industry, like so many others, doesn’t always reflect the diversity of the people it serves. There isn’t nearly enough representation of designers and designs that tell the stories of people who look like me. And that is why this collection had to exist. Stories like mine—and like yours—deserve to be told. Originally, I envisioned a romantic outdoor setting tied to the cultural richness of the Hausa landscape for this collection’s campaign. However, the weather had other plans, forcing my team and me to pivot at the last minute. While the location had changed, the spirit of the collection remained deeply rooted in its original inspiration. The gowns themselves carry the architectural precision of Hausa artistry, softened by romantic and organic details. This juxtaposition of structure and softness mirrors the balance between tradition and modernity—a story of love, beauty, and resilience that resonates across cultures and settings. As the pieces came together, my pride in this collection grew. Every gown feels like a celebration—not just of love but of culture, history, and individuality. The campaign reflects how love and beauty transcend borders, cultures, and even backdrops, much like the timelessness of the brides who wear these gowns. For brides who dream of something different, something meaningful, I hope this collection speaks to you. Each gown is a reminder that beauty lies in the details, in the stories we carry, and in the courage to celebrate who we are.
As I launch this collection, I’m filled with gratitude. To the brides who have supported my journey, to the team that brought this vision to life, and to everyone who believes in the power of representation—thank you. Together, we’re creating a world where more brides can see themselves reflected in their dream dress. Here’s to love, culture, and the stories that bind us all. With love, Sheila.
